How do you make a Skylander(TM) cake?
I educated myself on the Skylander(TM) website, poked around the Internet, there are so many clever bakers who have created realistic and beautiful Skylander (TM) cakes. Most, have used rolled icing.
However, rolled icing is not quite my cup of tea! Don't get me wrong, I love it, you can create the most long lasting and realistic decorations for your cake, if you make a mistake, you can start again, you can make it way ahead of time. There's simply too many advantages than disadvantages except 1. Sweet! It's always too sweet, after all it's sugar.
A basic round cake with 'stone walls" all around. How to create the "stone walls"? The option of rolled icing keeps coming back as a foolproof solution. No! too sweet, that would ruin the taste balance of the cake. I remembered the good results I had with the crackle cookies I made for Christmas, it was a big hit, taste and appearance.

I love it!! I am also not a fondant person. I have to make one of these for my nephew. Do you mind sharing the cookie recipe?
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie, sorry for the late reply, I am not very good checking my blog for comments. This recipe may come a little late, but I hope you will still find it useful:
ReplyDeleteCream together until light & fluffy.
1/2 teaspoon salt
110g butter, room temperature (salted or unsalted works fine)
200g light-brown sugar
Then add
2 large eggs, one at a time
1 teaspoon vanilla
225g dark chocolate, coarsely chopped, then melted
Whisk together:
175g plain flour
55g cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
Fold flour mix into butter mix, alternating with
80ml milk
until dough is formed.
Press out dough as evenly as possible in between 2 pieces of parchment paper.
Chill dough 20 minutes, Roll dough out to 3/4 inches thick
Cut the dough into strips (with a knife) or any desired shape (you could cut them roughly to look like rocks) The dough will shrink slightly during baking, so allow plenty of extras for both shrinkage and breakage.
Chill the dough again for another 20 mins, remove this time roll it in icing sugar twice. until it's absolutely covered. Arrange on baking sheet.
Bake at 180C for 12-15 mins depending on the size of your cookie.
To trim the final cookie for your cake, use a serrated knife and saw gently.
